Description
Mona Lisa and Willie Nelson - Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die - Mixed media record albums pop art collage print by Steven Shaver.
The discovery of a vintage record album featuring the famous Mona Lisa painting on the cover led to an idea to create pop art collages from record album covers, gameboards and other collectables that could include her. Starting with Nat King Cole, love songs have been sung about Mona Lisa, but what if there were album covers with images of other famous singers that could be shown next to her singing and looking at her? What if monuments like the Statue of Liberty on album covers, iconic athletes like Babe Ruth on baseball cards, or game trinkets like the cat on Monopoly gameboards were placed at her side trying to get her attention? What would Mona Lisa be thinking?
Collage features Willie Nelson song lyrics and repurposed record albums: Mona Lisa (with added cowboy hat) on Leurs Amours album cover and Willie Nelson on Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die album cover.
Original 'Mona Lisa' song facts:
This song was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the 1950's movie Captain Carey, U.S.A. It won an Oscar for Best Song. In this song, Nat King Cole compares his love to the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The Mona Lisa if famous for her smile and her mystique, as the portrait has become one of the most famous works of art in history.
In 1990, Willie Nelson did a cover of the original Mona Lisa song.
Original 'Mona Lisa' song lyrics:
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only 'cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa
Lyrics: 2012 Willie Nelson Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die
Roll me up and smoke me when I die
And if anyone don't like it, just look 'em in the eye
Say I didn't come here, and I ain't leavin'
So don't sit around and cry
Just roll me up and smoke me when I die.
You won't see no sad and teary eyes
When I get my wings and it's my time to fly
Just call my friends and tell them
There's a party, come on by
And just roll me up and smoke me when I die.
Roll me up and smoke me when I die
And if anyone don't like it, just look 'em in the eye
Say I didn't come here, and I ain't leavin'
So don't sit around and cry
Just roll me up and smoke me when I die.
Well just take me out and build a roaring fire
And just roll me in the flames for about an hour
And then pull me out and twist me up
And point me towards the sky
And roll me up and smoke me when I die.
Roll me up and smoke me when I die
And if anyone don't like it, just look 'em in the eye
Say I didn't come here, and I ain't leavin'
So don't sit around and cry
Just roll me up and smoke me when I die.
I didn't come here, and I ain't leavin'
So don't sit around and cry
Just roll me up and smoke me when I die.
Note: Watermark will NOT be on print. The black outline is part of the design to make the collage appear framed, not an actual frame.
