Description
Mona Lisa and Elvis - Can't Help Falling in Love - Rock-A-Hula-Baby - Mixed media record album covers pop art collage by Steven Shaver.
The discovery of a vintage record album featuring the famous Mona Lisa painting on the cover led to an idea to create pop art collages from record album covers, gameboards and other collectables that could include her. Starting with Nat King Cole, love songs have been sung about Mona Lisa, but what if there were album covers with images of other famous singers that could be shown next to her singing and looking at her? What if monuments like the Statue of Liberty on album covers, iconic athletes like Babe Ruth on baseball cards, or game trinkets like the cat on Monopoly gameboards were placed at her side trying to get her attention? What would Mona Lisa be thinking?
Collage features altered song lyrics and repurposed record album covers: Mona Lisa on Leurs Amours cover (with added Hawaiian lei flowers) and caption, "A little less conversation, please" and Elvis's 1961 classic Blue Hawaii album, with 'Can't Help Falling in Love' and 'Rock-A-Hula Baby' featured in the musical comedy movie.
Original 'Mona Lisa' song facts:
The song was written by Ray Evans and Jay Livingston for the 1950 movie Captain Carey, U.S.A. It won an Oscar for Best Song. In this song, Nat King Cole compares his love to the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. The Mona Lisa if famous for her smile and her mystique, as the portrait has become one of the most famous works of art in history. In 1958 Elvis Presley also sang the song.
Original 'Mona Lisa' son lyrics:
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you
You're so like the lady with the mystic smile
Is it only 'cause you're lonely they have blamed you?
For that Mona Lisa strangeness in your smile?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Do you smile to tempt a lover, Mona Lisa?
Or is this your way to hide a broken heart?
Many dreams have been brought to your doorstep
They just lie there and they die there
Are you warm, are you real, Mona Lisa?
Or just a cold and lonely lovely work of art?
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa
Elvis's 1961, 'Can't Help Falling In Love', lyrics:
Wise men say, only fools rush in
But I can't help falling in love with you
Shall I stay? Would it be a sin?
If I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
Like a river flows, surely to the sea
Darling so it goes, some things are meant to be
Take my hand, take my whole life too
For I can't help falling in love with you
For I can't help falling in love with you
Elvis's 1961, 'Rock-A-Hula Baby', lyrics:
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock
The way she moves her hips to her fingertips
I feel I'm heaven bound
And when she starts to sway, I've gotta say
She really moves the grass around
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Rock-a-hula, rock-rock-a-hula
Rock-a-hula, rock
Although I love to kiss my little hula miss
I never get the chance
I wanna hold her tight all through the night
But all she wants to do is dance
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock, rock, rock, rock
Rock-a-hula baby
Rock-a-hula baby
Got a hula lulu from Honolulu
That rock-a-hula baby of mine
Oh that Rock-a-hula baby of mine
